One fan to rule them all, and also save space?
Hi
I'm thinking about a design for a very small, 4k capable machine. I'm not planning on building it now, so an obvious route is the hx 395 2.0 whenever that releases.
However, I was also thinking about a custom design combining the CPU and GPU into sharing a single fan.
So, the motherboard would be on the side (say left). Then a big ass 140mm or bigger fan in the middle. And then on the right a de-shrouded GPU connected via pcie cable. The PSU would be something like an sfx box, one of those that are common for very small, sub 4l cases. Maybe the PSU will share the GPU compartment rather than being at the bottom.
I understand that this is basically a sandwich set-up, but it is reverted; rather than CPU and GPU each's fan facing the outside, they are both facing inside with a single fan pushing air through them. Alternatively, maybe using a nonconductive material between them to prevent metals brushing and scratching between the two, and a single fan pushes air upwards from both. Similar to the original Corsair one design. Again, this is still a sandwich design, but the motherboard and the GPU are squished together to save space and while both have separate heatsink, they share a single fan large fan.
Are there any obvious reasons why this cannot work? I can imagine the fan not being directly pushing air through strong static pressure being one. If the fan is on top instead of being in the middle between them, then it is an even bigger issue because the fan is to the side rather than pushing air directly facing the fins. I can rotate both, but then the big ass motherboard, or the GPU (take your pick) will obstruct air from reaching to the other component. Two fans each side may fix this at the expense of size, but yeah it is one problem.
TLDR: Sandwich setup. Motherboard and GPU squished against one another with. Single fan between them (no metal or empty space between them. no shroud and no individual fans). Alternatively, two fans on each side pushing air (again motherboard and GPU squished against each other. Maybe only a thin layer of silicone or something to prevent heatsinks scratching each other. Alternatively a single fan on top pushing air out. Everything else is pushed against each other.
Makes sense? Stupid? Major issue I didn't account for?
Acoustics is no issue. I expect to run the fans like a banshee begging for merciful death
