Exported annotations are a mess out of sequence
(This might be kind of messy)
I'm talking about the plain text export accessible from the Kobo itself, which are saved in ""Exported Annotations" in its root folder.
They are written in the sequence you actually highlight text, not necessarily in the sequence the text appears in a book. So when I go back and forth and add / remove highlights, it becomes a mess.
The three dot menu for a book on the Kobo has an "Annotations" entry. When viewing it on the Kobo, there's sorting drop-down menu for "Recent" and "Location". The page updates accordingly, but it doesn't seem to do anything regarding the export, when doing an export from this page.
Secondly, but minor, there's no color (nor position) associated with the annotations or highlights (not surprising seeing as it's just plain text, just saying).
That however is included if you do "Backup EPUB Annotations File" from "KoboUtilities" plug-in in Calibre. It looks like an xml file. So all that's missing is some kind of syncing with books in Calibre, and / or some simple utility to extract it (in book sequence), so one might get an annotations extract. Preferably (optionally) formatted so to keep colors (or not if plain text).
I have added an "Annotations" plug-in, but I have no idea where it is (guessing it's the menu entry in "KoboUtilities" for importing them?).
As for the handwritten stuff idk quite how that functions yet, apparently there's no export for those.
For some reason I didn't really began to use annotations (or rather highlights) until recently. (Already lost 2-3 longer documents' annotations - not books but still a few hours, but not really a big deal - due to me messing with Calibre settings and Kobo folders, but that's kind of another case).
So I'm not sure where I'm going with this. But is this how it is? And any hope of Kobo / Rakuten / whoever improving this?
Btw this is for Epub, not kepub, idk if those work differently regarding annotations.
Also, as a wish, I'd like if one could import annotations (with color) as well. Just throwing it out there. Backing them up and restoring them would be so much easier than the mess that is Calibre imho, but I'm no expert in Calibre.
(Have to sleep now, replying when I can)
