Is this normal??

I recently noticed something weird with my Apple Pencil. Somehow, I’m able to interact with my iPad without the tip even touching the screen. Instead, the back of the pencil seems to work almost like a wand or pointer, and the iPad responds to it. Im not touching the screen im just hovering slightly above the screen. I’m not sure if this is an actual feature or if something unusual is going on with my device. Can someone let me know if this is supposed to happen.
