So my ex and I got a dog together. I had always wanted a husky and it was discussed several times that the dog was for me, and we got her a cat that she had always wanted (Maine coon). Well, the relationship ended very poorly on her behalf, and she continued to disrespect me in the months after as we were still living together while I was looking for a new place. I tried to be the bigger person and end things amicably so we could both still see the pets before she kept crossing boundaries over the last month of living together. My last straw was her asking me if she could take the dog to the park while I was working a long day. I agreed. She took her to her new boyfriends and never brought her home that night.
I have since moved out and took my dog with me. She asked if she could see the dog today or tomorrow (she knows I am working long days both days). I told her I was not comfortable with that after what happened last time, and furthermore that I needed space from her in general and don’t want her in my life for the foreseeable future.
She threatened to take legal action, as the adoption paperwork is in her name (not sure what I was thinking letting that happen without my name on there too). I have changed the vet and pharmacy records to my name. I have also been saving food receipts. From everything I have read, It seems like if I can prove I am the primary caretaker, she will not be able to take her from me. I also have multiple people willing to testify on my behalf.
I am not sure she will go through with her “legal action,” but if she does, does anyone have any experience with this type of situation? I am just worried because the adoption papers are in my exs name. Thanks in advance for any helpful input!
