Re-springing 2017 KTM 300 XC-W — heavier or lighter when you're between sizes?

Recently picked up a new to me 2017 KTM 300 xc-w. I am currently 260 lbs geared right now. Slavens chart puts me at the very bottom of the 254-276 lb bracket — so 72P rear shock and 5.0 N/mm fork.

However I fluctuate weight a lot and Ill often be closer to 248-250lbs with gear. This would put me in the 231-254 bracket — so 69P rear and 4.8 N/mm fork.

What would you order? Is it better to go with the heavier springs or lighter? Would it make sense to go with the heavier spring on the shock, and the lighter spring in the forks? I mostly ride rocky mountain trails and some occasional desert/dunes.

New to 2-strokes -- premix ratio for 2017 300 XC-W w/ Lectron?

Coming off 20 years of 4-strokes, just got a 2017 KTM 300 XC-W Six Days with a Lectron carb. What ratio are you running and with what oil? Manual says 60:1. Is that applicable with the lectron carb?

Also, any reason not to just run 52:1 (5 gal / 12oz) because the math is dead simple? Manual calls for 60:1 but 52:1 seems close enough and easier to mix on the fly.

Mainly do mountain trail riding, not riding super hard. Occasional desert and dunes. Appreciate any input.

Three KTM 300s in my area — which is the best deal?

Hey all, looking for help on which bike to buy. I ride a lot of mountain trails with rocks and steep climbs, occasional desert/dunes. Coming off four-strokes, so completely new to the 2 stroke world. Im used to older honda 4 strokes with low maintenance.

2017 300 XCW Six Days — $5,250 / 238 hrs Fresh top end (10-15 hrs), Lectron, mousses F/R, new fork seals, chain/sprockets, new battery, Seat Concepts, desert tank, rad fan. Well-maintained.

2017 300 XC — $4,800 / 108 hrs Lectron, high-comp head, IMS 4.25 gal tank, Seat Concepts, lights, hand guards, new chain/sprockets and rear tire, lots of spares. Needs fork seals, no mention of top end.

2020 300 XC TPI — $5,250 / 125 hrs High-comp head, ECU remap. Thin on maintenance details.

Which one's the best deal in your eyes? Am I crazy for going with the XCW with the most hours, just because it seems the most well maintained and has a fresh top end?

Looking at two 2017 KTM 300 XCWs and trying to figure out which is the better buy. Both have nearly identical hours (~238). Would appreciate some outside opinions. XCWs are harder to find in my area.

Bike 1 — 2017 KTM 300 XCW Six Days Edition — $5,300

  • 238 hours total, new top end with only 10-15 hours on it
  • New sprockets and chain
  • Bib mousses front and rear
  • New battery
  • Fork seals replaced (10-15 hours on them)
  • Seat Concepts seat
  • Desert tank
  • Radiator fan
  • Lectron Smart Carb
  • Wrap-around handguards

Bike 2 — 2017 KTM 300 XCW — $4,200

  • 239 hours total, owner has put 20 hours on it in last 3 years (original top end)
  • Aftermarket Lexx pipe
  • Pipe guard
  • Comes with extra plastics and new front/rear tires (not mounted)

The Six Days is $1,100 more but has a fresh top end, fresh fork seals, mousses already in, and a bunch of extras. The standard XCW is cheaper but seems less likely to have been maintained well.

Which would you go with and why?

Listed at $4,700, seller would probably take $4,000. Kickstarter gear sheared — seller says a KTM mechanic took it apart, cleaned it thoroughly, and put it back together since parts were backordered. He's put 15 hours on it since with no issues. He won't share the mechanic's name (side job, doesn't want him in trouble), so I can't verify.

E-start works and he has a backup starter button. I know I can bump start it if the battery dies on the trail.

Main worry is metal shrapnel from the sheared gear chewing up the clutch or trans down the road. From what I've read, fixing it later runs $75–$250 DIY or $300–$700 at a shop.

Is $4k fair for a 2017 XC in this condition, or am I asking for trouble? What should I look/listen for on a test ride?

Edit: Typo in Title should be CRF 450x

Looking to upgrade to a newer (to me) bike. Coming off an old XR400 that I genuinely loved, but I'm ready for something a bit more modern. I have owned modern 450s before, but xr400 has been my go to for awhile.

I ride ~85% mountain trails with steep inclines and rocky terrain, ~15% dunes and open desert.

Heres what I'm considering right now:

  • KTM 300 XC or XC-W (Not totally sure which would better) I've been seriously eyeing these, but I'm not sure how well a 300 holds up in the dunes and open desert. I also have zero experience with 2-strokes, and the maintenance side scares me a bit coming from the XR400, which was pretty bulletproof and low-maintenance.
  • More trail-friendly 450s like the CRF450X or KTM 450 XCF-W.

Hoping to stay somewhere between $3k–$5.5k. Im about 6' and 240lbs with gear.

Would love to hear thoughts, especially from anyone who's run a 300 two-stroke in mixed trail/desert terrain, or made a similar jump from a thumper to a 2-stroke.
