A trip I’ve had in the planning stages for a while has been going down to San Diego and spending a day at one of the reservoirs where there’s good amounts of sizable Blue Cats. I’m struggling to learn much about how to effectively target them in a big/deep lake. I have a kayak so I can move around the lake and paddle out baits, but I’m not clear on what contours to focus on or what kind of structure/geography might act as a hot spot for the fish in such a large body of water.
It’s also my understanding that catfishing during spawn is generally a bad idea since the fish are sitting on beds and not really foraging, but I’m not sure how long that period typically lasts. Is it usually done by August/September?
Unfortunately, none of the lakes are open to camping so it would have to be a fully daytime endeavor. The plan would be set up on a bank somewhere, paddle out a couple baits (sardines or mackerel probably, just what I have available fresh), then dick around until I get a bite.
Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.
