A common argument used by liberals when the topic of gun control comes up is that we should treat guns like we treat cars. Since cars are heavily regulated and kill a lot of people, these liberals believe the same logic should be applied to guns because guns are "designed to kill people".
Ignoring the fact that there is no right to keep and drive cars in the Constitution, let's focus instead on what would happen if we treated guns the same way we treated cars.
If we treated guns the same way we treat cars, then:
- A permit would only be needed to carry/operate your gun on public land. There would be no permit necessary to carry a gun in your own yard
- A 15 and a half year old could get a learner's concealed carry permit and start concealed carrying when they're 16
- Concealed carry permits would have universal reciprocity in all 50 states
- There would be no background checks to buy guns
- Except for a handful of foreign-made guns, you would be able to acquire any gun manufactured in the US and only need permits for carrying those guns out in public
- Being a felon would not remove your right to own a gun or have a concealed carry permit once you're released
- Insurance would be required, but it would be cheap and even less necessary than car insurance since in my dad's 45 years of owning a gun he's never had to use it on anybody
Since liberals are already arguing for stricter background checks, against concealed carry reciprocity, for increased purchasing ages, and what bans on what types of guns you can own, it is clear and plain for anyone to see that when a liberal says we should "treat guns the same way we treat cars" they are lying because treating guns the same way we treat cars would massively expand gun rights and reduce restrictions.
