Racism In Arlington (Landlords)

I know I posted a question earlier and expressed my experiences with searching for rentals ... however it is clear to me racism/discrimination is alive and well in Arlington, VA despite being a liberal county.

This is not a troll post, this is not a one-sided post, but a touchy reality - that makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever.

Here are quick facts about me...

● Military Veteran like everyone else in the area.

● Security Cleared Gov-Contractor by the FBI, DHS, DoD, Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency, Arlington County Police, and DC Metro Police, etc.

● My lifestyle is relatively reserved due to my line of work and career I built operating in InfoSec and Intel. Therefore, I am NOT the person to use drugs, party, vandalize, or destroy property. If anything, I'm an introverted nerd who "stays out the way" because we live in a crazy world in crazy times.

☆ After all, it's safer to be "inside" vs. "outside" seeing how there was a hostage situation in Arlington, VA 4-days ago, including, random violent crimes happening in Montgomery County, MD and Northwest, Washington, DC. Both "affluent" demographics by the way.

Arlington Landlords...What Is Your Problem?

Hi Arlingtonians,

I recently have been searching for a room rental in the Clarendon/Ballston area to reduce my commute from Montgomery County, MD. Simply because I value: reduced stress, lower transportation costs, better sleep, better long-term health, easier work reliability, less vehicle depreciation, and improved day-to-day quality of life.

Now, what I’ve noticed while using Zillow, HotPads, and Craigslist is that communication from some landlords seems surprisingly inconsistent. I’ll reach out about a listing, respond quickly, and then either never hear back or experience long delays despite the listing remaining active.

I also noticed some landlords prefer handling everything over lengthy text exchanges instead of a quick phone call or tour. Personally, after long workdays, I find a 2–5 minute call much easier for both parties when discussing basics like employment, length of stay, availability, etc.

That said, maybe this is just a different rental culture than what I experienced in California, where same-day tours and faster communication are far more common. So, for those familiar with Arlington rentals:

  • Is this pretty normal for the area?
  • Are Zillow/HotPads/Craigslist just unreliable here?
  • Or is there a better way to approach landlords in Northern Virginia?

For context, I’m a working professional looking for a room/sublet in the $700–$1200 range near Arlington to avoid the 4:30 AM commute into Virginia every day. To include, pay less to learn the city before getting my own apartment. Call me strategic but I rather rent a room...get a feel for the area...before splurging.

Curious to hear others’ experiences.
