ALIEN, and What That Movie Says To Us About the Meaning of Life
Every time I watch the movie Alien from 1979, I always am reminded of just how amazing this movie STILL is to this day. I mean, it has obviously launched one of the most successful film franchises of all time (7 standalone films, 2 crossover films, and a TV show), but the original is still just as terrifying and beautifully shot as any movie coming out today.
Most recently, I’ve watched the entire franchise in my spare time. Upon rewatching again, I feel like this movie has a lot to say about humanity and how best to adapt to an ever-changing world.
Humanity’s biggest fear is not to be eaten by a giant Xenomorph (while I’ll admit, it is rather terrifying). Our biggest fear is death. It always has been, and it always will be until the earth dies. Some people will do just about anything to ensure that we stay alive for as long as possible because for them, they have no faith in something better than this after life. The true fear is the dark abyss of nothingness, and what better setting than the abyss of space, where no one can hear you scream…
