Boston backyard gardeners: this is maybe a perfect week to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, other warm weather seedlings to gardens/backyards/containers outside

Hi fellow Boston backyard/deck farmers, looking at the forecast, it looks like we are reaching daily minimums at night just at or above 50 degrees and so this might be a great time to take out tomato, squash, cucumber, zucchini, pepper and other such summer crops seedlings.

Every spring I am so tempted to plant things on the first warm week in April, then it snows again, then early May is such a rollercoaster. But I am pretty sure this is a safe week for planting! My salad and mustard greens, peas, some herbs are already outside and doing great.

Curious what other Boston-based gardeners are doing—are your summer seedlings already outside or are you waiting for even warmer weather?

For people visiting and who may not know the Boston context, hope this info is useful for planning how to get to the FIFA world cup matches and who are traveling from or near Boston.

  • Boston’s Gillette stadium is actually 22ish miles, well outside of Boston, in Foxboro.
  • There is only one access road which will be open during FIFA games, with no shortcuts. The road will be a traffic nightmare.
  • Parking during FIFA will be limited to 5000 places (1/4 of the usual number of spots!) to make space for security check and perimeter.
  • No private drop-off pick-up by the stadium is allowed.
  • People have been hours late and missed a previous game (Brazil-France friendly match) when attempting to drive or rideshare there in March.
  • Walking is really not safe there and not advisable—there are no pedestrian or bike routes, the area is going to be pitch dark, high speeds and potential drunk driving will pose a real hazard.
  • The direct MBTA access train shuttles from Boston South Station to Foxboro are going to be the most reliable, stress-free option for many fans, IMO. Return tickets are 80 dollars, the guarantee of timely arrival seems to be worth it to me to avoid hours of traffic and missing out on the game altogether. There is info and tickets here, you need to provide the email address which was used to buy the match ticket, but it does not need to match the email you use to buy the train ticket : https://www.mbta.com/worldcup.
