Does anyone have a favorite source to get an accurate picture of the kinds of everyday folklore, beliefs, and magic that typical folk in the Roman Imperial period, pre-Constantine?
I'm less interested in the well-known mythology absorbed from the Greeks and more interested in the uniquely Roman and lesser known stuff. Everything from common legends that made a difference to the average person (not just the state) to what cryptozoological creatures/ghosts/spirits they thought existed to what magic/curses they thought efficacious. I'm okay with either academic or lay-audience books.
Thanks in advance!
