Mirena IUD experience - first 3 weeks
I want to share my experience (so far) with the Mirena IUD. 30F, diagnosed with adeno at 26, no kids. My adeno symptoms were:
- very heavy flow
- spotting 3-8 days a month
- extreme cramping
- lower back pain
- nausea
- weakness/fatigue
Insertion date was 4/21. The procedure was okay; cramp with insertion but nothing major, just an annoying pinch for 30 seconds. My blood pressure dropped on the drive home ~20ish minutes after procedure (I have this problem when I get sick, in pain, heavy periods, anxious…) and I started sweating, feeling light headed so I closed my eyes and power through the ride home. At home, I fell asleep for an hour or so. I woke up fine, just a bit crampy and dehydrated from the sweating. I was able to eat normally and I even went to the gym that night for weightlifting (took it easier though!).
Bleeding after was light and lasted 1.5 days after insertion. Pelvic pain and light cramp lasted a week, stronger > lighter; moving helped ease the pain and discomfort a lot (light walks, stretching), and I was able to have sex normally at day 5 (no pain). By day 7, I was 100%.
My first period came 10 days after insertion (4 days earlier than expected), lasted 11 days, and the bleeding was lighter than usual and very irregular (stopping, coming back, stopping…). Very light cramping for a very short time (max it hit was 3 out of 10 on pain scale, hot pad took care of it without meds), lightly sore breasts in the first two days of period. The worse part was the length of it - my periods are normally 5-6 days so I was so done! Still a bit spotting but with adeno that has been my normal as well.
I was a bit moody days before/early in the period, but I’ve been going through a very stressful time at work, so I can’t tell if it was hormonal or related to the stress and pressure I’m currently under.
I also want to point out I am very acne prone, and I have a skin care routine that keeps it under control. I was scared the IUD could make it worse, but I only noticed 2-3 very small acne spots on the first week after insertion, and nothing ever since.
So far, it’s been going great! I know it’s only a couple of weeks, but I am so glad I’m trying this!
