I'm a newbie and I'm learning ways of introduction. In the resources I use one of the example used was "Ich bin die Maria" but later "Ich bin Annette Wilhelmsen" was used.

I know die/der means something similar to "the".

Are they used for different situations? Is one more formal? Do I have to use die/der? How much is it used and is it better to just use "Ich heiße ..."?
