We're expecting our first child soon and I need to convert the office into a baby room (lower left corner of my diagram).

First step is replacing the old carpet, and I've been debating about whether or not to attempt DIYing it. I've read about how laying carpet properly is much more complicated than it seems to an amateur, and many people seem to advise against it. I don't want to assume I'm a special exception to that rule, but on the other hand, I would be working with a nearly-square 12x12 foot room with lots of time to take it step-by-step. I don't necessarily need to do the closet, although I could consider it if that makes sense. I'm fairly handy with things like woodworking and electronics and good at following video tutorials, but have honestly never done anything with carpet or other flooring projects.

So 2 questions really:

1.) Does this seem like a reasonable project for a first-timer, or would I be getting in over my head regardless of the room size and configuration? Is carpeting in general just best left to pros?

2.) If this does seems doable, are there any common "watch outs" or advice I should consider?
