I made a joke about my husband during a family get-together, and he responded playfully with a “puppy face.” My mother-in-law saw this and, also jokingly, said, “If you hurt my child, I will hurt you.” Even though it was said in jest, it hurt me. She didn’t really know what was going on between us, yet she chose to make that comment. It made me feel like she doesn’t fully respect me. When I spoke to my husband, he initially said she was just joking, but later apologised when he realised how much it affected me. When I reflect on it, it may seem trivial, but I still feel disrespected—especially since similar things have happened before.
