New Hire - Sick Attendance

Hello everybody, looking for some peace of mind about my recent attendance.

I’ve recently been hired for almost two months now as a part-time temp in D28 (seasonal). My contract is supposedly to end in July, but have been told they keep certain people on as permanent, of course if they are performing well within their current contract period, and for Canada a 90- day “probationary” period.
I have been taking on full-time 40 hrs, picking up xchange and co-workers shifts since I’ve started. I go out of my way to use G.E.T with every customer I pass, I always try to learn whatever I possibly can in a shift (product knowledge, packdown, watering, condensing, keeping skids neat, answering phones, and helping electrical/hardware as needed, etc.) I say this because majority of my co-workers in the dept unfortunately tend to stand around in groups their entire shift and go out of their way to ignore doing anything unless management is around. my depart manager specifically told me a few weeks ago that she signed me up for advance live goods training so I could become one of their “experts”. I felt like this has given me an opportunity to take on more in the position already.

Fast forward to this week, I had only been scheduled 20 hrs this week oddly but figured they were trying to spread them out among other new hires. Woke up extremely sick on Monday morning and thought I had food poisoning. I did NOT want to call in, as I had less hours already, but mainly about my anxiety around my attendance affecting my performance and reputation so far.

Had a shift from 1-5, unfortunately I had to call in due to the fact that I was sick to my stomach to say the least. Reported it on the app, didn’t call the store figured no biggie this will pass I’ll be good for my Thursday shift.

Unfortunately I have only felt worse since as I suspected I’ve caught an infection. I’m seriously congested, feverish, coughing, coughing phlegm. I’ve been keeping hydrated, and doing all that I can to rest and feel better. I did go to the emergency room yesterday morning because I haven’t been able to keep much down in terms of food. I was severely dehydrated and nurses tried for an hour to find a vein to insert an Iv, after six tries no luck. Was sent home with antibiotics, been drinking bottles of Gatorade yesterday and today.

I attempted to go in for my 8hr shift this afternoon, still feeling like death.
I apologized to my manager for my absences this week, and explained I didn’t want to take up too much of her time as it’s Saturday, it’s freakin busy and I’m no help standing here whining about how I feel.
I just felt rundown walking across the parking lot, unfortunately by the time I was able to talk to her I knew I needed to go before I got worse.
I apologized and told her I’d be better for my shift on Monday.
She seemed understanding, not impressed obviously but I don’t blame her one bit. I got the “ if you’re sick you’re sick this stuff happens”.
I’m concerned that this will affect my performance and the likelihood of being kept on. I realize each store and management can be different in terms of how things are run, and I fully understand the attendance policy.
Though I just realized I never reported on the app about my absence/ early leave when leaving today. I just reported it now.

Sorry for the rant, I feel like I’m overthinking it. I’ve been really loving my time here so far and would like to keep a good impression so I can have the opportunity to stay on and move up when appropriate.

Former Associate struggling to become rehired

Good evening all, apologies for the rant in advance…

I was a former consumables associate among helping out periodically in other departments; GM, cash and customer service, freight and merchandising team, electronics and garden at two different locations in Canada. I was employed for just over a year and a half, before unfortunately having to quit after taking a medical leave due to some serious health conditions at the time. I did part on a good note with my manager, and she said she be more than happy to have me back on their freight team specifically at the time when I was able to get better and of course positions were still available.

Since then I have unfortunately moved away from these locations. I now live near 3 locations that are much larger stores than the previous two I was previously at. (One wasn’t even a superstore).

I have been applying to these 3 locations consistently for upwards of a year now to EVERY single position posted.
I’ve applied as a previous associate
I’ve applied without stating I was a previous associate and removed the job from my resume.
I’ve made two completely new workday accounts with different emails and applied again.
I’ve called the locations multiple times, asking to speak to manager regarding my application. I receive one of three scenarios:

- “the manager isn’t in right now”
- “sure I’ll transfer you” gets left on hold for half an hour with no response.
- “Wait for an email, go apply online” from an employee.

I have gone to these locations personally and given my resume to what seems to be department managers and have briefly explained my previous experience but it seems like nothing has ever gotten through, and I literally cannot get ahold of a manger to follow up. It even took a few back and froths getting past customer service to get to meet with a manager briefly. As soon as you say a thing regarding hiring they try to turn you away.
I have received emails in the last few days about tasks being assigned finally specifically for the “People Lead” position. I only found that out by calling the help line as when I go to click on the link for the task, it takes me to the current employee login which I don’t have an existing login for. The employee on the help line informed me I’d need to contact the hiring manager and was able to give me her name. Though I cannot get ahold of the manager, and anytime I have gone in to ask to speak to her directly if she has a moment, she’s “unavailable” or not in. This is the PEOPLE LEAD MANAGER.
I’m all for understanding managers are busy busy people, the job market sucks rn and this isn’t just a Walmart issue.
These locations majority of the time have tons of positions open, but I can never seem to get past the review and get no response for tasks.
I have completed the initial assessment that goes along with the applications as well.

What am I doing wrong? I’m ready to send a cover letter to corporate with my resume at this point…
I did enjoy the work that Walmart has to offer and I’m seriously wanting to return if I could have the chance to be considered by a human being!!!
