New Hire - Sick Attendance
Hello everybody, looking for some peace of mind about my recent attendance.
I’ve recently been hired for almost two months now as a part-time temp in D28 (seasonal). My contract is supposedly to end in July, but have been told they keep certain people on as permanent, of course if they are performing well within their current contract period, and for Canada a 90- day “probationary” period.
I have been taking on full-time 40 hrs, picking up xchange and co-workers shifts since I’ve started. I go out of my way to use G.E.T with every customer I pass, I always try to learn whatever I possibly can in a shift (product knowledge, packdown, watering, condensing, keeping skids neat, answering phones, and helping electrical/hardware as needed, etc.) I say this because majority of my co-workers in the dept unfortunately tend to stand around in groups their entire shift and go out of their way to ignore doing anything unless management is around. my depart manager specifically told me a few weeks ago that she signed me up for advance live goods training so I could become one of their “experts”. I felt like this has given me an opportunity to take on more in the position already.
Fast forward to this week, I had only been scheduled 20 hrs this week oddly but figured they were trying to spread them out among other new hires. Woke up extremely sick on Monday morning and thought I had food poisoning. I did NOT want to call in, as I had less hours already, but mainly about my anxiety around my attendance affecting my performance and reputation so far.
Had a shift from 1-5, unfortunately I had to call in due to the fact that I was sick to my stomach to say the least. Reported it on the app, didn’t call the store figured no biggie this will pass I’ll be good for my Thursday shift.
Unfortunately I have only felt worse since as I suspected I’ve caught an infection. I’m seriously congested, feverish, coughing, coughing phlegm. I’ve been keeping hydrated, and doing all that I can to rest and feel better. I did go to the emergency room yesterday morning because I haven’t been able to keep much down in terms of food. I was severely dehydrated and nurses tried for an hour to find a vein to insert an Iv, after six tries no luck. Was sent home with antibiotics, been drinking bottles of Gatorade yesterday and today.
I attempted to go in for my 8hr shift this afternoon, still feeling like death.
I apologized to my manager for my absences this week, and explained I didn’t want to take up too much of her time as it’s Saturday, it’s freakin busy and I’m no help standing here whining about how I feel.
I just felt rundown walking across the parking lot, unfortunately by the time I was able to talk to her I knew I needed to go before I got worse.
I apologized and told her I’d be better for my shift on Monday.
She seemed understanding, not impressed obviously but I don’t blame her one bit. I got the “ if you’re sick you’re sick this stuff happens”.
I’m concerned that this will affect my performance and the likelihood of being kept on. I realize each store and management can be different in terms of how things are run, and I fully understand the attendance policy.
Though I just realized I never reported on the app about my absence/ early leave when leaving today. I just reported it now.
Sorry for the rant, I feel like I’m overthinking it. I’ve been really loving my time here so far and would like to keep a good impression so I can have the opportunity to stay on and move up when appropriate.
