I’m a student in Chennai, and something has been bothering a lot of us recently. Over the course of our degree, we’ve been asked to pay several different fees apart from tuition things like book fees every semester, placement fees, career fees, alumni fees, and examination fees etc. At the time, most of us didn’t question it much and just paid. But looking back, many of us feel like the value we received didn’t match what was charged especially the book fees, since we didn’t actually receive materials anywhere close to that amount. Recently a few of us decided to politely ask the college for a detailed breakdown of these fees just to understand what exactly we paid for. We asked for clarification. Instead of getting a clear response, some students were called in and told that asking such questions was “demanding,” and were discouraged from pursuing it further. There were also indirect statements suggesting that pushing the issue might affect things like placements or other processes, which made people uncomfortable. We’re not trying to create trouble or accuse anyone, we just want transparency about where our money went. Has anyone else experienced something similar? What would be the best way to handle this without putting ourselves at risk?
