Flash modded iPod 7th Gen - Scary overheat issue.
I’ve got an issue with a flash modded iPod, hoping the community might have some insight. For background, this is my old 7^(th) Gen Ipod Classic, which I’ve modded with the iFlash uDual (with one 250GB memory card) and a 3000mAh battery from AliExpress, and I’m running Rockbox. I love it, and it’s been working fine for the last few months.
Recently, and without any trigger that I could tell, it’s been freezing on the rockbox boot screen, with an ATA error 2147483605 message coming up. If I leave it on this screen, it gets extremely hot on the back plate, to the point of it actually being too hot to touch the metal. I know, very dangerous territory. If I reset to the ipod factory screen whatever is happening stops and it cools back down. This has happened a few times, and I’ve now taken the back plate off and removed the battery for safety.
I’m 99% certain this isn’t a battery issue, instead I think it’s the iFlash uDual. I’ve come to this conclusion because the heat is localised to the location of the flash drive (though I’ve not checked yet with the back open, frankly I’m a little scared). On the battery side of things, there’s no swelling, nothing that would make me think it’s unstable, but that said, it’s now been exposed to way to much heat sitting next to the iFlash, so I’m planning to order a replacement whatever I do.
Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? Should I get in contact with iFlash? I really want to get this thing working again, it’s my joy and I don’t want to go back to the soulless black mirror of a phone/modern DAP.
