Country Storytelling
I love American country storytelling songs and always wanted to write them. Is it OK for middle aged English guys to do that?
Lyrics:
My dad only called me when he drank I saw his name and let it ring I'd heard those words a hundred times before And told myself I'd call him back at four He kept my photograph upon the dash When he should've watched the road Forty winters he drove that rig Ready for the start of spring
I called at four and it rang out I called at five the line was dead At six I heard a knock upon my door A lone star shining on a badge They said he pulled a family from a burning car Then went back for the baby boy Neither of them stood a chance But neither of them had a choice
Cold morning in Uvalde The mesquite's holding frost The town's still pinning ribbons For the man they think they lost He knew where to find me On the left side of the dash The baby that he couldn't save Who never called him back
The whole town came to shake my hand today I smiled and I thanked them one and all November casts her shadows long Where the county put his name up on a wall It was easier to let it ring Now the April sun will always wait So I’ll take his secret with me As I drive the 83 the other way
Cold morning in Uvalde The mesquite's holding frost The town's still pinning ribbons For the man they think they lost He knew where to find me On the left side of the dash The baby that he couldn't save Who never called him back
