Trying to pivot into creative fashion from a nontraditional background — Paris programs worth it?

I’m 22 and graduated last year with a degree in informatics/business analytics. I just finished a year-long internship in that world, but I’ve realized I want to pivot into creative fashion — styling, creative direction, vintage curation, visual storytelling, shoots, etc. I have retail + vintage boutique experience and run a small vintage resale business, but I don’t have a formal creative portfolio or industry network yet.

Long term, my dream honestly isn’t really corporate luxury — it’s more having my own creative world somehow: a vintage storefront/concept space, brand, curated retail experience, creative studio, something along those lines.

One reason I’m considering a master’s/creative program in Paris is because I feel stuck where I currently am. I don’t have many opportunities around me to build a portfolio, assist on shoots, meet people in the industry, or immerse myself creatively. The idea of spending 1–2 years in Paris feels appealing not just for the degree itself, but for the environment, connections, portfolio building, and honestly the easiest path toward living there legally for a period of time through a student visa.

Right now I’m looking at programs like:

  • Parsons Paris MA Fashion Studies (2 yrs, more theory/culture/research based)
  • Marangoni Paris Fashion Styling & Creative Direction (9 months, more hands-on/portfolio focused)
  • IFM luxury/fashion management (more industry/business/prestige focused)
  • PCA fashion-related master’s programs (more interdisciplinary/creative)
  • IESA (more curation/art/cultural management oriented)

I think my biggest fear is that styling/creative direction is what I feel most called toward, but it’s also the hardest area to break into without already having a portfolio or connections.

So I guess I’m wondering:

  • for someone trying to break into creative fashion from a nontraditional background, what matters more: portfolio output or school prestige/network?
  • is a shorter styling-focused program enough to realistically break in?
  • are there other Paris programs/schools I should be considering that bridge creative + business + fashion culture better?

Would really appreciate any honest advice from people in the industry or anyone who’s done these programs.

Breaking into styling / creative direction without a traditional fashion background?

I'm 22, just finished a year-long analytics internship after graduating with an analytics degree but what I'm actually drawn to is fashion styling, creative direction, vintage curation, visual storytelling, shoots, etc would eventually love to have own business/brand or storefront.

For context: I've worked in luxury resale and at a pre-owned designer boutique, and I run a small vintage resale business on the side. I know I have a strong eye and aesthetic instinct. But I don't have a fashion school background or a real portfolio yet, and the industry feels intimidating to break into from the outside.

I'd love to hear from anyone who made this pivot. Did you:

  • go to grad school?
  • take short courses?
  • assist stylists?
  • build projects independently?
  • move cities / network into it?
  • just start creating and post everything online?

And if you could go back and tell yourself one thing — or skip one step that wasn't actually necessary — what would it be?

Genuinely open to any real talk.

Choosing direction Postgrad fashion paris - help! need advice

I’m 22 and feeling really conflicted about my next step after graduating college and would genuinely love advice from people who’ve pivoted careers or studied abroad/grad school.

I graduated last may with a degree in Informatics/business analytics and just finished a year-long analytics + digital marketing internship. It was great experience, but I’ve realized I don’t want a traditional corporate/9-5 path long term.

What I’ve always actually loved is fashion especially vintage, styling, curation, visual storytelling, sourcing, shoots, creative direction, etc. I’ve worked in luxury resale/vintage and run a small vintage resale business, and I eventually dream of having some kind of vintage storefront / brand / creative space.

I’ve always dreamed of living in Paris, and now I’m considering doing a master’s there as a way to pivot into a more creative world + gain connections, experience, and direction. I’ve been researching programs like Parsons Paris Fashion Studies, IFM luxury management, Marangoni styling/creative direction, etc.

The hardest part is that styling/creative direction is what I feel most drawn toward, but it’s also the area I have the least formal background or portfolio in, which makes the pivot feel intimidating. Meanwhile the more business/luxury management programs feel “safer” with my background, but maybe less aligned creatively.

I also don’t really have a strong creative portfolio yet, which makes me nervous applying to styling-focused programs. But part of why I want to do a program is because I want opportunities to actually builda portfolio through projects, internships, and creative work.

I think what I’m craving most is being immersed in a creative environment and figuring myself out through experience instead of staying stuck where I am now.

Would love advice from anyone who’s been in a similar place or has thoughts on creative grad school/fashion programs/career pivots in your early 20s.
