Can’t get CW work

On the list to be selected as an apprentice, trying to get CW work until then. Entry level, zero electrical experience.

I’m having trouble getting them to assign me to a CW call, though. I first applied to CW 3 months ago while I was waiting for my apprenticeship interview, but I’ve only been following up daily for the past 2 weeks. At this point I’ve visited the union office in person multiple times, and have the guy’s phone number so I can text him every morning. I actually saw a call this morning on the website for a low level CW in my area, and asked this guy via text if I could have it, but he said to check back with him in 2 hours. Which I did, only to be told it wasn’t available anymore.

How does this work? Do I need to slip someone a $20 to get dispatched?

Really, if someone could provide some insight, I would appreciate it. My next move is to go up there every morning and stand next to his desk until I’m given a job.

Local 20 - Score and Rank withheld?

I was placed on the waiting list for an apprenticeship, and advised to gain hours as a CW (which I am doing). However, they refuse to tell me what I scored on my interview, or where I stand on the ranking list. I can’t figure out why they would withhold score and rank information. From what I’ve seen, most other locals do share this info with candidates. What’s the deal? It seems like knowing your score and rank would be especially valuable for those of us who weren’t selected. If I know I’m in the top 10, I’ll definitely stick around and wait to be called up. But if I’m near the bottom of the list, I might take to mean I should find a different profession and not waist my time. OR - more likely, knowing I am ranked so low would inform me that I didn’t prepare hard enough and do things differently the second time around.

Anyone else confused and frustrated by this policy?

Working on getting assigned as a CW after being put on the waiting list for an apprenticeship. Going to get my 450 hours, then interview again.

But I’m curious how common it is to work 5 days a week as a CW and as an apprentice? I’ve seen people posting about 6 10s per week and more - is that the standard? Do you have any say over whether you work 5 days per week, or 6, or 7? I have 2 young children, so trying to set the expectations with my wife before I get started.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Been through the apprenticeship application process and got the email this week saying that I wasn’t selected. I have been put on the list. (Also, they don’t share ranking or score with applicants, so I have no idea how far down the list I am. Totally in the dark.)

The email recommended gaining experience as a CW, which I am open to. But it also offered this 2-week bootcamp through the IBEW-NECA Electrical College as an option. It says that the committee might reevaluate my credentials upon completion. Has anyone done this bootcamp, and could you share your experience?

It would be in Le Grange, TX, and food and lodging would be provided. Which has me about 5% worried someone is trying to lure me out to the middle of nowhere to harvest my organs. But it’s probably fine.

Been working on this restoration for a few months. This is my first attempt at restoring vintage audio equipment, so any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

Refinished the case, cleaned up all chrome and plastic, and cleaned and reassembled the turntable. It's looks great and is functional. The only issue is a loud static that plays out of the right speaker. The right speaker does play audio, but the static nearly drowns it out. The left speaker sounds great.

I already confirmed the speaker isn't the problem by swapping the wiring for the right and left speakers. The static moved over to the left when I did this.

I have also now replaced the following capacitors, according to the photo fact: C81, C82, C83, C85, C86, C87, C88, C90, C91, C92.

Still right speaker static. What should I try next? Leaning toward replacing the big capacitors within the power supply, or the speaker wiring.

Photo of the unit included, and will include a link to the Photo Fact PDF.
