Made a free networking platform for filmmakers based in Calgary — iOS app just launched
Disclosure up front: I'm the founder of the thing I'm about to talk about, so skip this if self-promo isn't your thing. Happy to answer anything, including the hard stuff.
I'm Kris — based in Calgary. I built FilmConnect, a free networking platform for filmmakers. The website is fully live and the iOS app was just approved by Apple this week. Android is still in review with Google Play and should land in a few weeks.
What it actually is
Think of it as a filmmaker-specific version of a professional network. You build a profile with your reel, credits, and the roles you work in. Then you search for collaborators by genre, budget, role, and project type — DPs, editors, producers, sound, VFX, AC, gaffer, anyone you'd realistically crew with. Messaging is built in so the whole collaboration lives in one place instead of getting scattered across Discord, Instagram DMs, and email threads.
Why I built it
I was making my first short and trying to find crew was brutal. I was bouncing between six different Facebook groups, scrolling Reddit threads, DMing people whose reels looked right, and hoping for replies. The tools out there weren't built for filmmakers — they were built for everyone, and worked for no one. So I built the thing I wished had existed.
Why it might actually be useful for SAIT folks
- Find crew for your school projects without trawling six group chats.
- Build a real network with other students and working Calgary crew before you graduate.
- A profile with your reel + credits + project history that's more useful than a LinkedIn page for film work.
- It's free. No subscription. No premium tier. No paywall.
Where things stand
- Website: Live at https://filmconnect.studio — signup takes ~90 seconds.
- iOS app: Live on the App Store as of this week. Search "FilmConnect Studio"
- Android app: In review with Google Play. Coming soon.
What I'd love from this post
- Try it. Tell me what's broken. Early users genuinely shape what this becomes — anything you flag now will likely get fixed.
- If you do try it and it's useful, share it with your cohort. The platform's only as good as the people on it, and SAIT folks are exactly the community I built this for.
Roast it, use it, ignore it — all valid. Questions, feedback, or hard truths welcome in the comments or via DM.
