So uh… how fucked am I?
Took my 2014 brz (64k miles) to the dealership for a code P0018 and think I got the worst news possible. They said my LH intake sprocket needs to be replaced along with my ECU since it did the thing and learned bad values. That along with the fact that the recommended a cam carrier reseal. The thing is they quoted me $11k which is more than I bought the car for. I took it to my families mechanic and he said he’d fix it for 2.8k but not do the ECU because that doesn’t make sense to him and the ECU can’t learn values, so I think he’s full of it. I sent the report to an independent shop that works on Subarus and they told me my only option was to go through the dealership, which I can’t afford. But at Subaru they made it sound like I could go to an independent shop and they agreed that their own price was astronomical. I’m so lost on what to do, I need my car but can’t afford that crazy amount. If anyone has shop recommendations in the Bay Area (Ca), that would be huge. Thanks.
