Hi everyone!
I'm planning my first terrarium for a Corn Snake (80x60x60cm / approx. 32x24x24 inches). I live in a house that gets quite cold during the winter, except when my pellet stove is running in the living room. I want to build a robust setup and would love to hear your thoughts on a few points:
1. Enclosure Material: What’s best for thermal insulation?
Full glass terrarium?
Full wood (OSB or Melamine)?
A hybrid build: A wooden structure with a full glass-lined interior, but a wooden ceiling? Do you think a hybrid is the best compromise between hygiene (easy cleaning) and insulation?
2. Heating: What is most effective for a cold environment?
Heat mat only (placed under a ceramic tile for protection)?
Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE) with a guard cage only?
A combination of both: Heat mat for belly heat/digestion + CHE for ambient air temperature?
3. Wooden Ceiling & Humidity:
For those with wooden or melamine enclosures, how do you mount your CHE to the ceiling? Have you had any issues with humidity damaging the wood if the ceiling isn't lined with glass or PVC?
My goal is to ensure a perfect thermal gradient and stable humidity levels, avoiding common beginner mistakes.
Thanks in advance for the help!
