I'll try to keep this brief but detailed. I woke up and my lower jaw was hurting and so I looked around and found a dentist that could see me that day. I got in and the dentist took copious X-rays and told me that I had a severe infection and that tooth needed to come out right then, the infection was all the way into the gum and the tooth couldn't be saved. ok no problem. He did a deep cleaning first then after numbing me up started breaking the tooth apart. The pressure was OK but then after I spit out two or three parts of the tooth he started going deeper and hit nerves. I lost it. I started shaking and while I wasn't "crying" as an emotional response tears did start coming from my eyes from the sheer pain I was in. The doctor had to stop every few minutes to have me slow my heart rate and calm down and I felt so bad for wasting his time because I was a big baby. He thought I was going to have a stroke or a heart attack in his chair but he had to keep drilling to get the tooth and infection out. I got thru it and need to go back for 7 more root canals. My question is what can I do as a patient to help calm myself down before I freak out in his chair again? Can you as dentists work on a patient if they're drunk or high? I still need more work done but I need help addressing my shaking and elevated heart rate?
