Hi! I’ve been planning a new deck recently and got pretty stuck choosing a commander to build around. I’d really appreciate some input from you all!
Some of my current decks
[[Zurgo Stormrender]] – My favorite deck. I love Mardu and its playstyle, and I have a lot of fun planning turns while creating and sacrificing tons of tokens. My main plan is going full aggro with those tokens, while also burning opponents with ETB effects like [[Impact Tremors]] and [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]], plus LTB effects like the classic [[Zulaport Cutthroat]]
[[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]] – My mono-black combo deck. It was originally built with a tournament in mind, so it’s a fairly classic Yawgmoth list: lots of small creatures to sacrifice, undying synergies, and combo enablers. What I enjoy the most here is the aristocrats playstyle and the mono-black identity overall. I love playing on low life and being a constant threat at the table
[[Animar, Soul of Elements]] – One of my oldest decks, and the only one I’ve kept from when I first started playing Magic. I still enjoy it a lot because of the aggressive creatures and combo potential. Some of my favorite cards here are [[Etali, Primal Conqueror]] and [[Defiler of Vigor]]
Play-style
That said, I clearly lean more toward aggro and combo, while control is probably my least favorite archetype. I’d like to build another deck that includes white and/or black in its color identity. Not strictly orzhov, but looking for some orzhov ideas as well!
Right now I have a few options in mind, but nothing fully decided
Considered ideas
[[Myrel, Shield of Argive]] – Seems really interesting, but from testing it sometimes feels a bit too “Voltron-ish,” and I’m not sure there are enough impactful soldiers beyond the obvious staples
[[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]] – Feels more explosive than Myrel, though both commanders lean into similar strategies and share a lot of pieces
[[Teval, The Balanced Scale]] – I’ve been considering this one quite a bit as a combo-oriented option. It enables some lines with cards I really enjoy, like [[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] and [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]]
Another idea I’ve been considering is a midrange Angel/token deck with [[Giada, Font of Hope]], but I’m not sure how well it would hold up
Pod
My pod usually plays around Bracket 3 power level, usually ending games in turn 7 and 8, always looking to optimize our decks without going full competitive. We don’t aim strictly for tournaments, but we do like our decks to feel solid and well-tuned respecting the boundaries of B3
Would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions!
