The Chinese Exclusion Act plays an important part in Asian American history. It was only about 80 years ago that these laws were still active. I thought that it would be suitable, given it's AAPI month, to post this.
Hi guys, I'm traveling back to China for the first time in almost 7 years. The last time I went to Hong Kong was when I was incredibly little in the late 2000s, and Fuzhou was right before COVID. Previously, I traveled with my parents (dad is from Hong Kong, mom is from Fuzhou), so this time I'm traveling with my friends, so I have no guide.
I have a few questions:
- How have things changed? What should I prepare for, such as a VPN, payment, etc.? I have WeChat, but I haven't set up my payment.
- I also know Mandarin decently, but I don't know any Cantonese or Fuzhou dialect, as I was never taught them. Will I be fine with just English and Mandarin in Hong Kong and Mandarin in Fuzhou?
- What are some other good destinations I should consider traveling to?
- How is the High Speed Rail, and should I use it to travel to other cities or fly domestically (from Fuzhou or HK)?
- Will I be judged much for being an "ABC", such as my accent being weird?
- Any other advice for me?
I'm pretty excited to see Hong Kong and Fuzhou again. I don't have many memories about Hong Kong, so that'll be interesting.
Thanks all!
