I have zero exp. on CMDB/CSDM module. Still had to take this exam as SN has mandated the certification for all CIS-SAM/CSM/ITOM etc. holders. Started prep in Jan and finally cleared it in May.
Attempt #1 - Just checking what kind of questions are asked
Attempt #2 - Prepped well but failed the sectional cut-off
Attempt #3 - PASSED.
(All Attempts sponsored by Employer.)
Tips for 1st time exam givers:
- Read through CMDB Fundamentals on Demand from SNU. (will take 1-2 weeks, but take it slow). This is 75% of the exam. Refer to my CMDB notes from the course on Notion.
- Here, focus on IRE, Dynamic reconciliation, Discovery vs Service mapping, Attestation vs Certification, Upgrade vs Downgrade vs Switch.
- Unified map and Query builder
- Navigate the CMDB workspace on PDI or demo account (required; questions are made on this as well).
- Attempt the CSDM tutorial in the CSDM-Fundamentals course. (this may not that helpful for the exam but it will give you some background on why CSDM is needed).
- Read on CSDM Data Foundations (from SN docs site)
- Read on CMDB Data Foundations (from SN docs site)
- Read through practice tests uploaded on Scribd.com (Google for CIS-DF questions)
- Collate all notes, product sites data, mock test PDFs and add to a Claude project. Ask Claude to provide MCQs (topic-wise) and answers with explanation. Enable "Web Search" in Claude so that is has context on CIS-like exam questions. I practiced 10 MCQs everyday, a week before the exam.
Claude was really helpful during practice.
The exam is brutal for people with no or minimal CMDB experience.
- 75 Questions and 90 mins time
- Multi-choice answer questions
- Match the following style questions (this becomes a subset of 3-5 questions)
- Most questions are practical in nature. Eg. "a CMDB admin is facing X-Y-Z issue in reconciliation. How should he approach the situation?"
There is SECTIONAL cut-off as well. In my second attempt I bombed the CSDM section, and had >65% on CMDB sections, but it marked me as 'Failed'. Sectional cut-off is 35% (est.).
Hope this helps.
All the best!!
