So I just finished re-watching the entire franchise (1-7) and I have some thoughts about Scream 4 that I would like to share …
Firstly, I enjoyed this movie a lot more (while watching all the movies collectively) than I did when I last watched it (it had been awhile.) I appreciate it for what it is a lot more now
It’s the unique one of the bunch to me for a couple reasons. First being the fact that it feels somewhat disconnected from the movie that proceeded it and the movie that followed it … adding a “stand-alone” quality to it that none of the other movies really have imo. Even though it’s technically a sequel to Scream 3 it does not go out of its way to reference the events of that film at all. The 11 year gap also adds to the disconnect. Funny because Scream (2022) feels disconnected from Scream 4 for the exact same reason (exact number of years between the gap included.)
Scream & Scream 2 always felt like a proper double feature to me . Scream 3 (despite the shift) felt like a direct follow up to Scream 2. They were all made within the same era and with the same style.
Then Scream 4 comes 11 year later. Naturally different and more modern feel and look (times had changed and we were in the remake era of horror.) It did not get an immediate follow up
Scream (2022) comes 11 years after Scream 4 and then it is immediately followed up by Scream VI with the same leading characters so they also feel like a double feature when watching them back to back. Scream 7 is sorta like the Scream 3 amongst the three because despite the shift it is made in almost the same style as Scream 5 & Scream VI. But naturally Scream 8 will probably feel more tied to Scream 7 than Scream 7 does to 5/VI assuming they keep the focus on Sidney, Tatum and Mark .
The filter also makes it unique (I know a lot of people hate it.)
