So I just finished re-watching the entire franchise (1-7) and I have some thoughts about Scream 4 that I would like to share …

Firstly, I enjoyed this movie a lot more (while watching all the movies collectively) than I did when I last watched it (it had been awhile.) I appreciate it for what it is a lot more now

It’s the unique one of the bunch to me for a couple reasons. First being the fact that it feels somewhat disconnected from the movie that proceeded it and the movie that followed it … adding a “stand-alone” quality to it that none of the other movies really have imo. Even though it’s technically a sequel to Scream 3 it does not go out of its way to reference the events of that film at all. The 11 year gap also adds to the disconnect. Funny because Scream (2022) feels disconnected from Scream 4 for the exact same reason (exact number of years between the gap included.)

Scream & Scream 2 always felt like a proper double feature to me . Scream 3 (despite the shift) felt like a direct follow up to Scream 2. They were all made within the same era and with the same style.

Then Scream 4 comes 11 year later. Naturally different and more modern feel and look (times had changed and we were in the remake era of horror.) It did not get an immediate follow up

Scream (2022) comes 11 years after Scream 4 and then it is immediately followed up by Scream VI with the same leading characters so they also feel like a double feature when watching them back to back. Scream 7 is sorta like the Scream 3 amongst the three because despite the shift it is made in almost the same style as Scream 5 & Scream VI. But naturally Scream 8 will probably feel more tied to Scream 7 than Scream 7 does to 5/VI assuming they keep the focus on Sidney, Tatum and Mark .

The filter also makes it unique (I know a lot of people hate it.)

Jill (Halloween II) & Will (Halloween H20) … kinda funny how these characters’ names rhyme and their death scenes mirror each other

Box office trajectory continued … it seems as though the franchise never really recovered after the poor reception of A New Beginning in the Paramount era .

Jason Lives suffered as a result and A New Beginning and it deserved more

The New Blood was butchered by the MPAA but performed on par with Jason Lives. I wish we had gotten the original uncut version but it would’ve made much less with an X rating

Jason Takes Manhattan was the final nail in the coffin and I’m pretty sure Paramount knew that before they released it

Jason Goes to Hell was like taking a dead horse and selling it a new owner to beat it. Even the “final” marketing wasn’t enough to make people go and see it this time

Jason X probably would’ve made atleast double of what it did if it hadn’t been leaked onto the internet and bootlegged before it’s US release

Freddy vs Jason was a huge comeback moment for both 80s horror icons

Friday the 13th (2009) did well in the end but had absolutely no legs at the US box office . It had one of the biggest second weekend drops on record. I think that’s the real reason why there was no rush to make a sequel

Box office trajectory … it’s interesting that audiences made the original a huge hit while many people that saw the original must’ve skipped part 2 for some reason and then came back for part 3 and 4 I’m assuming because of the 3D gimmick and the false “this is the last one” marketing
