Mac Pro 5,1 official Apple SSD 512GB

So I was looking for an SSD for my Mac Pro 5,1, when I remembered that Apple actually sold one back in 2010-2012. So I did some research, and after not finding any photos, articles whatsoever I decided to check part numbers. So, I went on eBay and looked for the part number, and there was one for sale from the Netherlands. Mint condition, and it is insanely over engineered.

It is mounted on a standard HDD bay, however one side had no screws, it was mounted with clips instead if you want to call them that. The SSD itself was held down by two screws inside a 3,5” adapter that had 512GB written on it, in a similar style as on the iPad classics.

The SSD is pretty heavy and made by Toshiba, and mine had 24 months power on time (!!), so I will probably preserve that and use another 512GB SSD instead. It is such a cool find though, these were sold by Apple very rarely due to the very high price back then, so finding one was pretty hard.

But I will be using a 512GB SSD inside this official, cool looking housing from now on!

Hello everyone,

Someone just offered me a Radeon Pro W6800X Duo MPX for the Mac Pro for 2000 Euros. This is probably the hardest GPU to get, and I am strongly considering it right now. To further elaborate:

Right now, I have two Vega IIs. I removed one of the Vega II to make room for the Promise Pegasus R4i, so I will be selling that GPU anyways. In Germany this will get me around 650 Euros per GPU, so 1300 in total.

Now, the W6800X Duo in question costs me 2000 Euros, coming from a German movie studio.

On my Mac I mostly do local AI, which I think would immensely benefit from the 64GB VRAM compared to 32GB, plus the W6800X Duo uses a much newer architecture than the Vega II.

Plus, I would be able to double my VRAM without having to get rid of my R4i.

What do you guys think, is it worth it? It seems like a great upgrade, and if we consider the Metal Geekbench chart, it still scores way higher than the M3 Ultra. I know, the W6800X is technically below the M3 Ultra, but that's because Geekbench only benchmarks one of the two GPUs, so in applications that can take advantage of two GPUs such as local AI, this would make it score way higher than the M3 Ultra still, correct?

Also, as from what I've seen on another thread, the W6800X Duo should also allow me to use the new Studio Display XDR in full 5k @ 120hz.

Oh and I am not planning of upgrading to a Mac Studio anytime soon. macOS still gets two years of security updates, plus I use Windows 11 Professional way more than macOS anyways, at least on my Mac Pro. Windows is also not a limitation for me.

Even though it is not made for gaming, the W6800X Duo should also perform very well in gaming, since you can compare it to the 6900 XT. Way better than the Vega II at the very least!

So I am in the process of buying another Vega II for my Mac Pro to run local LLMs.

I now have found out about the Infinity Fabric Links or Jumper or whatever they are called and now I'm wondering: Do I need the big one or the thinner one(s), I see some photos with one big jumper and some with two smaller ones, and also how do I connect these. My Mac Pro (check my profile for photos) currently has some kind of a cover over these ports. How can I remove that, and what Jumpers do I need? Can someone help me?
