What to do? RBR50/40/30/20 and Satellites at end of life
Wonder if we can get a discussion going.
I and many others still have RBR/RBS 50/40/30/20 systems actively running. I personally have an RBR50 and a RBS20 wireless satellite active in my home. This system is rock solid and performs well to meet my needs. It runs in router mode.
I realize there will be no firmware updates after June 2026 for the RBR50, but frankly the Netgear firmware updates have been quite infrequent. I'm not highly technical on the support and security risks but would appreciate any discussion on the real risks to continue to use this system over the next 1-2 years. The following questions occur to me:
- What is the real risk to my network to simply continue to use the RBR50/RBS20 system? Can someone explain the actual risk profile in non-technical terms?
- If I were to install an inexpensive edge router and run the system in AP mode -- would that significantly lower the security risk profile?
- Should I consider installing 3rd party (Voxel) firmware (and what is the risk/benefit of doing that) to keep the firmware "supported"?
- What would be a reasonable/low cost solution to replace the RBR50/RBS20? I've considered a used RBR750 or RBR850 -- but these are nearing end of life as well, I think.
- Other thoughts?
