I'm an adult beginner driver with cerebral palsy using adaptive equipment (left foot accelerator + steering knob). I currently have a "rehab instructor only" learner permit restriction in Maryland.
I'm also currently trying to work with DORS/VR services, but as of now I'm mostly self-paying while trying to figure out funding and planning long-term.
I'm trying to better understand what a realistic adaptive driving progression/timeline usually looks like financially and practically for self-paying adaptive drivers.
For most non-adaptive beginner drivers, the process is usually:
learner permit
lots of free family practice (40–60+ hours)
some paid driving school/BTW lessons
road test
But with adaptive driving rehab, it feels kind of reversed because the "rehab instructor only" restriction means I can't practice with family yet, so early repetition/practice hours may all need to happen through paid rehab sessions.
My sessions are also pretty spaced out, which makes me nervous about losing continuity and needing to re-learn things between lessons. Since adaptive driving programs are specialized and cover multiple states/large areas, I know scheduling can be limited, so I'm trying to understand what's normal and realistic.

If you were self-paying, about how many paid rehab hours did you need before family mentor practice became possible?
Did your program eventually allow a hybrid structure (rehab lessons + family practice in a modified vehicle)?
Around when did they request removal/modification of the "rehab instructor only" restriction?
Did long gaps between sessions make it harder to retain skills?
Roughly what did your total training timeline/hours end up looking like?
If you went through REHAB of Frederick specifically, what was your adaptive driving journey/process there generally like?
From your initial evaluation date, how long did it take to:
start training,
complete sessions,
finish BTW requirements,
get vehicle modifications,
and eventually take/pass the road test?
About how many months or years did the full process realistically take for you?
