[pjo] I’ve read the PJO series about 4-5 times through, plus HoO, ToA, and the newer PJO college editions. I’ve somehow missed Greek Heroes and Green Gods. Are those worth a read?

Recently a student of mine was going through the original series and we had been discussing them whenever he came for his drum class. After sea or monsters I see him reading Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods.

Somehow this book has gone under the radar for me for all these years. I tried reading The Demigod Files a lot of years ago but remember it not being good. So I assumed these other two “spin off” books would also be just fillers?

My question is: Are they worth a read?

Given that I LOVE the original series and have also read Wrath of Triple Goddess and the one just before that a couple times as well.

Drum teacher here. I’m looking for songs that every drummer should know. Songs that every teacher should teach their students.

EDIT: Guys these suggestions are great. But could you maybe add some songs that have basic ghost notes and simple 16th note doubles on the kick? Like Sunday Morning by Maroon 5. Something I can teach a student who has JUST learnt how to play a 16th note double with the foot?

Also some songs with grooves like Don’t look back in anger? Thanks!

So just to be clear, I’m not looking for Advanced level songs like Rosanna by Toto or 50 ways to leave your lover.

I’m looking for songs for my students who are mostly beginner ato intermediate. I already have a BUNCH of beginner level songs that I teach according to the beats. I’ll give a few examples here:

Quarter note - Seven nation army, Do I wanna know, Demon Hunter - Golden, We will rock you

Beat 1 - Eye of the tiger, Caked by the ocean, Stay by Justin bieber, Enemies by ID, Butter BTS, Insane ,Billie Jean, My universe - coldplay, Enemy by Imagine Dragons,Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better

Beat 2 - Lil uzi vert - 20 minutes,Like a stone, Boulevard, Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood, Al Green - Let’s stay together

Beats 1 + 2 - Blinding lights, The strumbellas-Spirits, Sabrina Carpenter - Taste, Vultures, Island in the sun

So the basic stuff is covered. I want songs that I can teach which have basic ghost notes, some snare hits on the e of 1 or a of 2, a couple bass drums here and there on the e or a. A level up from the beginner stuff but also not advanced.

Stuff that lands somewhere in between but every drummer who is learning the instrument should know like Californication or Highway to Hell etc.

Thanks for the help!

I’m asking this because I’ve been playing drums since I was 13 years old. I’m 31 now. I’m a professional drummer and teacher, but for some reason or the other I could never continuously work on my double bass speed OR skill. Mostly because I never played in bands that needed that.

I’ve tried very hard for more than a decade to start regular practice and I do do it for a few days, but it almost always falls off and other stuff comes in the way. At one point I could play 140-150 bpm 16th notes before the speeds fell off due to lack of practice.

Now I’ve been practicing double bass plus a bunch of other stuff regularly for a while. I’m comfortable at around 125 bpm and trying to get it up.

Psychologically what stops me is my age. Back of my mind goes, “You’re too old to do this. You needed to do this in your teens or twenties. Everybody does it during those years. You wasted your time and your chance. It’s too late”.

Is that true? Given that I haven’t been in amazing physical shape as well but I’m trying to work on it, and the fact that I have a lower back injury, is it possible for me to still be able to play very fast double bass?

Edit: Edit: Thank you everyone for the encouragement and for sharing your personal experience. This has given me a lot to think about. The fact that I am feeling this way might be not because of my age but my health. My back issue has certainly let me down and it’s taking a while to get better (it’s a lower back disc bulge).

But one thing is certain: I have to get my health better and get physically strong while working on my double bass.

I’m already practicing and I’m not gonna stop this time. Did 7 days in a row, will take a break today, and carry on from tomorrow.
