Platform(s): iOS
Genre: Hard to specify, but it had RPG elements
Estimated year of release: 2009 - 2011, at a rough estimate
Graphics/art style: Very blocky, faux-retro visuals done in the style of an early Atari game - like a 2600.
Notable characters: all the characters were variations on the Pong bat or ball
Notable gameplay mechanics: the control system was idiosyncratic - you had to hold your finger on the screen and push / rub in the direction you wanted the ball. It was incredibly sensitive, and just a few strokes would send the main character zooming off uncontrollably.
Other details: I remember this game clearly, but can’t find any mention of it on the internet at all, to the extent that I wonder if I dreamed it.
Pong2. The game was a Pong derivative; it started off with a conventional Pong game, but when the ball went off the screen, the game followed it. The player was then given control of the ball (using the odd control method detailed above), and had to navigate from screen to screen, exploring and avoiding hazards like spikes and Pong bats. It was flick screen, and reminded me a bit of classic Ultimate games like Sabre Wulf or Atic Atac.
From memory, you might have been trying to find the Pong king. The game had very loud and distinctive music, in the form of 1930s-style jazz and swing. The visuals were quite trippy, with the blocky Pong characters and environments contrasted with bright green backgrounds and psychedelic colour-cycling.
Any ideas? I have searched through my download history, and can’t find it. Maybe I did dream it, but it seems so vivid!
