Hello, I am very new to the kombucha scene. I recently had a bottle of store bought booch and loved it. As a bit of diyer I decided to try my hand at making it on my own. This is my second attempt at growing scoby that had ended up with mold.

My process was:

Boil 7 cups of water

Add 1 cup of sugar until dissolved

Brew 4 bags of black tea (I used Earl Grey)

Allow to cool to room temp (about 20⁰C)

Place in a 1.3 gallon jar

Add 1 cup of store bought kombucha (could not find unflavored)

Cover with a cotton cloth

Same process each time (with different brand of kombucha) and mold on each batch. I know the white fuzzy stuff on top is 100% mold but is the substance under the surface pellicle forming?

I am thorough in cleaning the jar prior to use. I'm not sure if maybe my kitchen is too cold (20⁰c)?

I will most likely be buying a scoby from Amazon for my next attempt but I just wanted to know if it's my method doing me wrong?
