Spleen enlarged year+ after remission?
Has anyone had their spleen removed? Quick history on me. I had burkits lymphoma back in mid 2024, went thru chemo and came thru it clean. Had some immune issues (PiD) started CVIG no major issues. I had another check up PetScan back at end of December 2025, which made them do a lymph node biopsy which came back clean.
In March 2026 I ended up going to the ER for horrible pains in abdomen, most around left side under ribs. They did a CT scan and saw my spleen was quite enlarged (about 3cm bigger than Dec scan). But somehow said it was back issues causing the pain(ugh).
Contacted my oncologist, who did a follow up with me and I also saw my primary Dr, who suggested I really need to follow up about the spleen with oncologist/etc. After pushing the spleen issue with oncologist they did another PetScan and said I should prolly get a bone marrow biopsy. Scan found my lymph nodes still ok, but spleen lit up a lot and was bit bigger than the ER scan. When I went back to oncologist he suggested that my spleen needs to be removed, since no way to biopsy it and that likely the bone marrow biopsy isn’t needed. But if I wanted we could still do it. He also did some ‘special’ bloodwork to help determine and said based on that we’ll have better picture. I’m seeing him again later this week and he said depending on blood work he will likely ask if I wanted biopsy still or to just move ahead with the splenectomy since I’ll likely need it either way.
Has anyone else dealt with this kind of situation or does anyone have a suggestion? I’d also like to know for anyone that had one removed, how different is your life without your spleen?
Thanks to all. For some reason I’m more anxious about this than my original diagnosis..
Thank you!
