Talking to Middle Schoolers about their IEPs

How do you school based people talk to middle schoolers about their IEPs? I had a group of MS students and we got onto the topic of their classes, teachers, and support. I said that their IEP dictates the type of classes they are in and they had no idea what an IEP was. This led to a deeper discussion about IEPs, special education, and disabilities.

I feel like I may have opened a can of worms because these kids parents clearly didn’t tell them they were already in special ed classes. I want to prepare myself for whatever backlash may come my way but also want to be honest with the kids when they ask me questions.
