Wow, so I just watched the 1921 short animated film "The Pet." I don't think this gets nearly enough credit for being the first kaiju film.

It ticks ALL the boxes:
>Weird unnatural creature.
>Horror elements.
>City-wide destruction of property and architecture.
>Engagement with modern military forces.

This was in 1921, 4 years before The Lost World, 10 years before King Kong, 20 years before The Arctic Giant, 32 years before Beast. Hell, it was 7 years before Call of Cthulhu was written. This is absolutely the first Kaiju *film*.

*EDIT*
I meant first *film* specifically, there are certainly arguments for other stories.

So I'm reading Tarzan Returns, and there is a recurring thing where every time Tarzan get the jungle-sense that he's being watched, he turns suddenly to look the watcher straight in the eye and throw them off. And EVERY SINGLE TIME, all I can envision is this shot from the cartoon:

Combined with this stupid meme:

And then I just start laughing uncontrollably.

Looking for suggestions for a very, very niche playlist idea. The song "Fool on the Hill" by The Beatles has always given me a very strange, existentially terrifying feeling.

"And he never listens to them, he knows that they're the fools
They don't like him

The fool on the hill sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head see the world spinning 'round..."

That sense of someone on the edge of some terrifyingly great revelation or understanding of the world that is resigned to sit and watch because nobody understands them; THAT'S what I'm looking for. I listened to the song "Levon" by Elton John this morning and it sort of made me feel the same.

I guess it all kind of ties into the literary notion of "The Fool," the idea of someone who is considered foolish or mad, but is actually the wisest of all, and understands reality far better than most. But not in the "enjoying the simple things is true happiness" sort of secret wisdom, but the much darker "I can see the horrible end coming and everyone else is too blind to notice" sort of secrete wisdom.

So I've been racking my brain trying to think of others. Here's what I've got so far:

  • Fool on the Hill - The Beatles
  • Levon - Elton John
  • Pinball Wizard - The Who
  • Iron Man - Black Sabbath
  • Sounds of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel
