[Grade 12 English] Pride and Prejudice: British Imperialism & Social Hierarchies?

Hi everyone! I’m working on a presentation about Pride and Prejudice and I’d really appreciate some help!

I’m focusing on how the novel reflects political and social hierarchies of early 19th-century Britain (especially in relation to British imperialism, colonialism, and the overall hierarchical mindset of the time). Even though the novel doesn’t directly discuss race or colonies, I’m interested in how those ideas might still be embedded in the way class, status, and power are portrayed.

For example, I’m thinking about:

  1. How class structures in the novel might mirror larger imperial hierarchies

  2. Whether attitudes of superiority/inferiority between characters reflect the same mindset behind colonialism

  3. Any indirect influence of the political climate (like the Napoleonic Wars or Britain’s expanding empire) on characters or themes

I’m looking for:

Quotes from Pride and Prejudice that show hierarchy, exclusion, or superiority

Any insights or interpretations connecting the novel to imperialism, colonial ideology, or broader systems of power

Page numbers would be amazing if possible, but not necessary!

Thanks so much! Any help or thoughts would be really appreciated :)
