My accountant set up a company for me and handled the accounts. VAT returns were diligently filed like clockwork so all seemed ok. Then I started getting letters about a CT1. I won't go into the ensuing drama, but he is no longer an accountant and it turns out no CT1 or B1 forms have ever been filed, going back 4 years. Strangely the revenue have stopped contacting us about it, all has gone quiet.
I doubt this is going to go away and it will need to be dealt with, but I'm trying to figure out a plan before contacting revenue. My main concern is that the surcharges could easily outstrip the turnover of those four years, which wasn't much.
It is a ltd company owned by a holding company, owned by me and my wife. We are both directors. (The holding company has never had a CT1 submitted either, but as it has never made or received a payment it is exempt from fines, so I just filed four years of CT1s as a zero return and that's all sorted)
I could just call the revenue and ask their advice, but this could set off a series of unfortunate events. I have had a quote of 10k for doing the accounts and submitting them, with no guarantee of outcome - by which point I might as well file them myself and save the 10k for paying fines.
Any good advice out there?
