How to keep my job when I return to uni?

Hello all! I’ve always worked in hospitality part-time, during my studies. Around September 2025 I became unwell and had to stop studying AND working. Finally now in April I’ve managed to get a new job, but it’s full time and salaried.

I’ve never worked FT before and assumed I’d be paid hourly - especially in hospitality, so seeing my contract was quite a surprise! Issue is, I have to go back to uni in August, exactly at the 3 month point where I should pass my probation.

I’m worried to discuss my plans now, as no reason will be needed to serve me a 1 week notice during my probation, but my hope is to work half of my contracted hours, as a part-time employee while studying.

Main question:

  1. When is the best time to bring this up to management/HR?
  2. Can I get in trouble for signing a FT contract (term is indefinite)
  3. Will I need to sign a new contract?
  4. Any suggestions or advice on how to go about this appropriately in general? :)

Hello all. So I’ve done about 54 hours of automatic. Unfortunately it’s been a bit of a rough process learning, and I’ve had 5 different instructors. As a result, I’ve had to delay my test from May until October :(.

Anyway, I’ve stopped lessons for now, because I can’t afford to restart consistent lessons until August at the very earliest. Thing is I do miss driving and want to use this time to become a good driver, rather than just passing a test.

Was thinking I might try a manual lesson out of curiosity, and as a bit of a challenge. Anyone done something similar? And is it worth the effort? I guess most people switch the other way…
