Near miss with U-turn in middle of road - who would be at fault?
I'm ~10 seconds behind a Green Audi on a 20mph road starting this "maneuver".
- When I was ~10s away, they pull into a large layby/empty area on the left so my first thought was that they were waiting/stopping/whatever.
- When I was about ~5s away, the Audi swings out into the road to start 3 point turn (wasn't clear they were doing a 3 point turn at the time because I thought they were reversing into the layby.
- When I was ~2s away, the Audi reversed so the back half of the car was in the layby and front half in the middle of the road. Not sure why they didn't reverse all the way and wait for a gap to turn around.
- At this point, I stupidly assumed they were only reversing into the layby but I was wrong and they were doing a 3 point turn. I stupidly decided to overtake while half of the Audi is in the middle of the left lane not expecting them to drive forward again.
- He was looking the other way so braked late when he saw me overtaking but luckily no collision... but I did receive a middle finger and blaring of the horn 😬
I try my best to drive defensively all the time and anticipate what others are going to do, but I made a mistake by overtaking and made a bad judgement to assume they were just reversing in the layby rather than doing a 3 point turn.
My question is if there was a collision, would I be at fault? My guess would be yes... nonetheless I've learnt from my mistake and won't assume other driver's actions whatsoever going forward and continue driving defensively as possible
