How to move somewhere completely new?
My 26-year-old daughter lives in Liverpool and has reached a point where she feels ready for a completely fresh start somewhere in the south of England. She’s single, works remotely/flexibly enough that moving is possible, and doesn’t really have ties keeping her where she is now.
The problem is… how do people actually decide where to move when they don’t already know anyone there?
Our family is in Hampshire, but she doesn’t particularly want to move back near family. She wants somewhere that feels more “her”. At the moment she’s got it in her head that Essex might suit her personality and lifestyle better. Partly because she likes the vibe and humour of people there from what she’s seen online/TV etc., and she feels she’d fit in better socially.
She’s looked at maps, researched towns, used ChatGPT for recommendations, and narrowed it down to a couple of places that sound promising. But now we’re both wondering what the next step actually is.
Do people literally just drive to an area, walk around, have a coffee, look at the high street, maybe stay overnight and see how it feels? Or is there a smarter way to go about it?
It feels like such a huge life decision when you don’t already have friends, work connections, or roots somewhere. I’d love to hear from people who moved somewhere completely new on their own — how did you choose the place, and what helped you know it was right?
