Keep Clear and a traffic light
There's a junction in Saltaire that confuses me. I am driving on a side street, wanting to turn right to join the main street where it meets at a T.
There's a stop sign at the T, so I stop. To my right is a traffic light, currently on red. Immediately before the traffic light, on the main road and directly in front of me,is a "keep clear" box. To my left is a line of cars waiting just before the keep clear box.
I'm not sure what is intended here. Possibly I am supposed to remain at the stop sign until the way is clear and the light is green. But practically there will be no such occasion for most daylight hours in the weekend - people will continue to use the main road and stop only with the red light.
I'm also confused about the opposite situation. If I'm on the main road and I want to turn right, I should stop before the keep clear box until I can pass through it and execute a right turn. But sight lines are relatively tight - I won't actually know that I can turn right onto the side street until I'm in the box.
