For Poland and the Ukraine had long been enemies and engaged in bitter warfare in East Galicia and along the line leading down to the boarders of Western Ukraine, whose right to independence the peasant leader, Petlura, had supported for many months against the forces of Denikin, the Soviet Republic and Poland herself.
