Imperial offer holder – can’t choose between Maths and Mechanical Engineering (even for firm/insurance). Help?

Sending this for a friend who doesn’t have Reddit.

I’ve been lucky enough to get offers from Imperial for both Maths (BSc) and Mechanical Engineering (MEng). But I’m genuinely stuck, and it’s getting to the point where I need to decide which to firm and which to insure.

The problem isn’t employability or prestige as I know both are great. It’s that I don’t know which I’m more passionate about and which degree can open me to better opportunities or better wages.

Things I’ve been asking myself but still can’t answer:

· Will I get bored of just maths as it’ll be heavier on the theoretical side?
· Will I get frustrated by the messiness of engineering (eg: approximations, tolerances, reality not matching theory)?
· Is it easier to go from maths into engineering later (e.g., computational mechanics, CFD) than from engineering into pure maths roles?
· Which degree has more flexible career options if I change my mind in 2 years?

If you studied either at Imperial or had to make a similar choice, how did you know which one you actually loved ? And how would you decide between the firm and insurance, as I don’t really have many choices for insurance either.

Thanks
