Hello! Sorry if this isn't the right place, please let me know. I have just been in a car accident in Greece, rental company is on the job and police have been involved.
We have now found a hotel and are taking some time to
Figure things out.
Traveling along on a major road I attempted to turn into a minor road, I crossed double white lines, not knowing that this wasn't allowed, not an excuse but added for context. We were hit by oncoming traffic, three cars were involved. The car we were driving is likely to be totalled, but there is a slim chance it can be fixed. There was no ambulance involved.
We were fully comp on the insurance, paying more to wave any excess.
We have been advised by the rental car company that because this was a traffic violation, technically our contract with the company doesn't cover this. They are asking for a 'contribution' towards the cost of the car, their loss of earnings, and possible compensation claims. In exchange, they will provide a letter taking on full responsibility and removing any liability from ourselves.
They are refusing to give us a figure for this contribution, but have waived around numbers from 12k Eur to 25k Eur. They have asked us to come back, within 4 hours, with an 'offer'.
This sounds super dodgy. Has anyone else ever experienced this?
