Hi everyone, I’m an incoming transfer student planning to attend SJSU this fall for industrial design. I’m currently coming from Sacramento and trying to figure out housing.

My situation is a little specific; I may only stay for the fall semester (I’m considering reapplying to another school for spring), so I’m looking for something short-term or flexible, like subleases, month-to-month rooms, or 6-month leases. I am willing to discuss something more long-term once I hear back from the school I am reapplying to.

I’ve looked into on-campus housing, but the year-long license agreement makes it risky for me financially. Anyway, I had a few questions:

  • Is breaking out the license agreement possible if I don't plan on staying the full year?
  • Are subleases common around SJSU for fall?
  • What areas should I look into (or avoid)?
  • What’s a realistic budget for a shared room near campus?
  • Any tips for finding flexible housing without getting scammed?

If anyone is looking for a female roommate or has a sublease available, feel free to message me. A little about me: I’m 21, clean, pretty quiet, responsible, and focused on school. I’m mainly looking for a stable, respectful living situation. Also, I would prefer a furnished room if possible.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any advice or info!

Hi everyone, I could really use some advice because I’m feeling extremely overwhelmed and running out of time to decide (May 1 deadline is coming up).

I’m currently a CC student (architecture major, switching to industrial design). I applied to transfer for Fall 2026 and I was accepted to San José State University for Industrial Design and was rejected from Cal State Long Beach for Industrial Design (i also appealed and got denied again).

Even thought I got into SJSU for the same major, CSULB was my top choice because of the location in SoCal. I visited the campus and loved it. I knew I want to be in SoCal. However, my main priority is industrial design, and getting the proper education.

Now I’m stuck between a few options:

Option 1: Go to SJSU

Pros:

- Direct path into industrial design

- Structured program, so I won’t worry about not being on track in my education.

Cons:

- Not in SoCal (not super excited about the location, but I might only stay one semester since I am reapplying to CSULB for Spring)

Option 2: Take a gap semester

Pros:

- Rest (I’m honestly very burnt out)

- I can work and save up money

Cons:

- Lose momentum

- No guarantee I get into CSULB or even SJSU again after reapplying

Option 3: Move to Long Beach anyway + attend Long Beach City College

Pros:

- Be in SoCal

- Build connections

- Cheaper classes

Cons:

- No guaranteed transfer to CSULB

- Expensive

- I would have to figure out housing + job(s) quickly

- Feels risky

Right now, I feel like logically, SJSU is the safest and most direct path for my academic career. However my biggest fears are wasting money going to SJSU for just one semester if I transfer. I also fear that if I take a gap, I’ll lose my motivation for school. And I fear the possibility of not getting into LB or back into SJSU.

If you were in my position, what would you do?
