AIO about my new job not having any security measures for their cash?
Throwaway because my actual profile would give away my location partially and I don’t want to be the one to cause a robbery.
So, I just started a new job at a local food truck and their cash register situation is odd to say the least.
The food truck stays parked at their prep kitchen and it’s set up with only outdoor seating otherwise. I live in a smaller town, but it’s a big tourist destination so we see a lot of different people and it gets really busy and it’s not even peak season yet. Really busy as in bringing in $7k which is the highest I’ve seen SO FAR. It’s just me, 2 coworkers working the truck, and sometimes prep kitchen staff inside but not on weekends. The location is also about 5 minutes out of the main town.
Anyway, this is all relevant to set you up to understand why I’m a bit concerned about the cash situation. We’re not cash only, but we do take cash and we have a drawer for this. By drawer I mean the insert that goes in a cash register (see picture). It sits below the food truck window along with the bank deposit pouch which I can also get more change from if I were to run out. On hand, I probably have at least $1k sitting in front of me at all times, completely unsecured. When we close, the money stays where it’s at. It’s not brought into the prep kitchen to be secured nor is there a small safe in the truck. So, sometimes, it’s just me and 2 other people past 8pm closing down with at least $1k in cash unsecured. I’m also concerned because, when people pay in cash, I have to grab the drawer from where it sits and pull it onto my lap to give change otherwise it’s really difficult to handle where it’s at. So people can kind of see where it’s at and don’t hear a cash register open.
I know I live in a small town “where nothing bad ever happens,” but in my opinion, that phrase sucks because it’s nothing bad ever happens until it does. Where I used to live was even smaller than here (maybe 200 residents) and the bank was robbed twice because the person saw it as an easy opportunity. They were never caught either. I know to just hand the money over and would never try to protect it, that’s not my job, but I don’t want my coworkers or myself to go through being robbed.
My friend who used to work here tells me I’m overreacting and it’s my anxiety getting to me. That people only go for big sums of money and wouldn’t want just $1k. That no one would get hurt if you just hand it over. The thing for me is I know first hand how desperate people can get and it’s an easy target. I feel like it’s pretty dumb of the owners to put their employees in a high risk situation.
AIO about this situation or should I express my concerns with my boss about it? if so, what should I even say??
