Competing in Combat Sambo

Hey guys, a little while ago i went to a sambo tournament. One of my friends was competing and i was there to support.

I really enjoyed watching, and i might be interested in competing. I have a background in judo, i’ve competed internationally as a teen and early in adulthood. I continued recreationally (1x a week) ever since. I also have been training muay thai/kickboxing (2x a week) , BJJ (1x a week), and i attend a weekly MMA sparring class.

The closest gym from where i live that has a Sambo class is an hour drive away, i have a busy schedule so i wouldn’t be able to train very often since its that far and i don’t have consistent weekday evenings free to be away from home for like 4 hours. I could most likely only train Sambo exclusively like once every 2/3 weeks.

Could i still be competitive in any way without having that much exclusive combat Sambo experience?

Sode tsurikomi goshi in MMA

I have been practicing MMA for about a year now and I’ve been a fan for way longer than that.

Before i put my efforts in MMA i was a judoka, ive practiced and competed for over 10 years.

I have never seen anyone outside of myself attempt a sode in an MMA. It was my favourite throw when i was a judoka. Especially when my opponent tried to get a high grip.

During MMA sparring, i’ve successfully thrown a couple of partners with a sode from a clinch. It seems to work pretty well when ur opponent has no clue its coming. and it feels pretty cool to throw.

I can’t help but wonder if i should unlearn it tho, since in almost every scenario you can use a sode, you can just o goshi as well. and without a gi you can control an o goshi way better then a sode.

Still i think it would be pretty cool to see one executed on a high level in an mma bout tho.

my Judo background has been a detriment to my ground game

Hey guys, ive been practicing MMA and various martial arts for a little bit now, before i decided to switch my efforts into something else i was an international level judoka. I practiced the sport for over 10 years and always loved it.

Since i have switched over i realized i have a couple of holes in my game. But of them has caused me so many issues as my ground game.

It sounds silly that having practiced judo would be a disadvantage on the ground. Since you learn holds, armbars, and chokes. But the way a fight on the ground happens in mma is very different to one in judo

If ur not constantly working towards a hold or a sub in judo, the ref will stand you up very quickly (the second you stop making progress towards a sub or a hold). Meaning you have to rush your moves as the person attacking. And if ur defending you can just shell up for 10/30 sec and you are most likely just fine.

In MMA the ref doesn’t step in. No one’s there to save you. These habits that were effective in judo, are detrimental to my ground game here. I rush towards a sub when im attacking and shell up when im defending.

Is there any way i can “unlearn” these habits any faster? or is it just trial and error
